The Department of General and Applied Physics was established in 1933. This is one of the oldest departments in MGSU, which has preserved long-standing scientific and pedagogical traditions.

In 2017 the Department of Physics was reorganized. The updated Department was named the Department of Physics and Construction Aerodynamics. From 1 of September, 2017 to 31 of August 2020 a Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Olga I. Poddaeva headed the Department.

Since 1 of September 2020 Natalia A. Parfentieva, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is the Head of the Department.

From September 2021 the Department of Physics and Construction Aerodynamics was reorganized in the Department of General and Applied Physics. Today there are 14 teachers at the Department: one of them is a Doctor of Science, 8 are a Candidates of Science, 6 of them are Associate Professors, as well as academic staff, some of whom have been working at the Department of Physics for many years taking active part in the modernization and improvement of the educational process (O.V. Petrochenkova, V. Bulanova).

A lot of work is carried out to update the laboratory, new laboratory researches and mathematical processing of the experiment results have been introduced into the educational process. The Head of the Educational Laboratory E.K Kuvshinova takes active part in this process. She graduated from MGSU and today she is an active, qualified employee with gratitude for successful work.

The employees of the Department of General and Applied Physics regularly confirm their qualifications by taking part in scientific and technical conferences, including international ones. The results of scientific works are published in peer-reviewed Russian and foreign journals.

The Department constantly conducts scientific and methodological work. Many textbooks, monographs and methodological instructions for practical and laboratory studies in all fields of physics are compiled, published and regularly updated.

The student scientific seminar has been held regularly over the years with the participation of students and employees of other departments of MGSU.

The Scientific Study Clubs "Popularization of the physics achievements in the field of construction" and "Solving non-standard problems and in-depth study of physical and mathematical disciplines" have been operating at the Department since 2009.
