In 1934, the Department of Physical Education and Sports was established. At that time, it consisted of only five people. They brought all athletes and sportsmen of the University together and formed a cohesive team, thus laying foundation for MGSU successful sport history and future victories.

The first head and ideologist of the Department of Physical Education and Sports in the MISI named after Valerian V. Kuibyshev was A. G. Moreover, MISI representatives successfully performed in the second All-Union Spartakiad of educational institutions of the People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry of the USSR held in Moscow in 1936 and took the second place.

During the World War II academic staff of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, along with other teachers and students of MISI, fought for the freedom and independence of the country. Many worked in the rear at strategically significant facilities, restored the country after the devastation.

A new chapter of the sport history of the University began after the War in 1945 with the first MISI Spartakiad, which took place in only six sports. Since then the Spartakiad between Departments and later Institutes has become the main University sporting event..
