The Structures Testing Department was established in 1963. At that time it was the only specialized department in this field in the USSR.
The pioneers of establishing the department were corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Hero of Socialist Labor, Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences N.S. Streletsky and Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Yu.A. Nilender, who developed the main fields of scientific, educational, methodological and production work of the department.
The formation of the department was due to the demand for training engineers and researchers capable of conducting research in the field of improving methods for calculating building structures, taking into account the variability of loads and properties of materials during long-term operation of structures, as well as the need for further development of methods for experimental studies of the stress-strain state of structural elements in complex and diverse working conditions.
Over the years, several research teams have been formed at the department. Under the leadership of Professor Yu.A. Nylender, who headed the department, extensive studies of the thermally stressed state of hydraulic structures were conducted in order to study the influence of various factors on cracking and the work of concreting joints and the development of methods for regulating the values of temperature deformations.
One of the main scientific fields of the department work is the study of the actual operation of load-bearing structures of buildings and structures in various operational conditions.
The department organizes annual introductory, production, scientific and pre-graduate practice for students studying Civil Engineering, some of them are involved in the performance of contractual work and actively speak at student scientific conferences with reports on the subject of the department (15-20 students annually).
During the years of existence, the department has trained 14 doctors of sciences, over 100 candidates of sciences and hundreds of graduates.
Today, all teachers and researchers of the Department continue to conduct research in all the main fields of study announced by the founders of the department. The work is carried out both under contracts, grants from the Federal Agency for Education, and according to the research plan of graduate students. The results of these works are also used by academic staff to improve the educational process and to develop educational and methodological literature.
