Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures

The Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures is one of the oldest departments of National Research Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU). It was established by Artur Loleit in 1930 as a part of Construction Department in Moscow Higher Technical School (previous name of Bauman Moscow State Technical University) and later became a part of Moscow Institute of Civil Engineering (previous name of MGSU). Artur Loleit was the department’s first Head. Besides he was one of the founders of modern theory of reinforced concrete.

Acting Head of the department is Ashot Tamrazyan, Doctor of Technology (academic degree), Full Professor (academic rank), a full member of RAE (Russian Academy of Engineering) and a RAACS (Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences) councilor. He is an author of over 360 scientific articles, 6 monographs, 2 training manuals, 15 regulatory documents and study guides and several copyright certificates and patents. He has provided scientific leadership for 6 Ph.D.s in Engineering.

The department has extensive experience in scientific studies and educational processes.

The fields of activity of the department are as follows:

  • Calculation of cast and precast reinforced concrete structures;
  • Calculation of stone and complex structures;
  • Enhancing the reliability of structures in a stress-strain state;
  • Analysis of structures under high intensity dynamic impact (e.g. explosive, shock and cyclical effects).

Fields of study connected with building design, support of ongoing construction processes, technical assessment of building condition during the life-cycle or during the renovation are rapidly developing. Comprehensive educational, project and research laboratories are available for faculty and staff, graduate and undergraduate students.

The department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures has always held the leading positions in a number of scientific areas at all stages of mass construction in Russia, enriching practice with theoretical and experimental research, design experience, solving practical design problems, identifying promising ways in the development of new design solutions. Its academic staff participated in the preparation of regulatory documents, scientific, technical and educational materials, subsequently forming the basis for full-fledged training of specialists and a base for scientific research. Many major scientific and technical questions originated at the department and the results of their solutions became public domain.

The department took part in the implementation of a number of international scientific programs jointly with technical universities of foreign countries.

Department’s long experience in scientific research and teaching of reinforced concrete structures has contributed to the writing of the department of a significant number of textbooks and textbooks with the Ministry's graph by its staff.  Many generations became experts in civil engineering thanks to those manuals.

Achievements of the department include the formulation of graduation thesis. Its subjects, with rare exceptions, are based on real construction objects. There are many cases when individual projects were used by construction organizations. The department has always attached the greatest importance to variant design, because it is believed to be the most important, creative part of the entire project.
