Department of Russian Language was established in 1956 as a special division of MISI to work with foreign students. In 2013, it was renamed into the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language.
Ph.D., Prof. A.B. Abramov was the ideologist of forming this Department. From 1974 to 1989, the Department was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Professor Aleksey M. Ispolatov, participant of the Great Patriotic War, Brest Fortress defender. He has a great merit in the formation of the Department staff and the organization of educational work with students.
Сitizens of China, Romania, Hungary were the first students of the Department, later citizens from African countries, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia, as well as European countries came to study at the Department. Over the years of the Department's existence, over 5,000 foreign citizens from 100 countries have been trained at it.
From 1989 to 1996, the Department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogics, Associate Professor Margarita A. Kharcheva, who made significant contribution to the Department’s development the talent acquisition. M.A. Kharcheva is one of the authors of the "Russian Language for Engineers" textbook, foreign students of MISI–MGSU have been using it in their studies for many years.

Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Svetlana N. Belukhina headed the Deaprtment in 1996 – 2021. S.N. Belukhina is one of the authors of the publications "Construction Terms and Definitions. Terminological dictionary", "Dictionary of terms of modern entrepreneurship", monographs "Russian language and culture of professional communication of non-philologists". |

Experienced teachers, Associate Professors Valentina P. Krylova and Evgeniya N. Mastyugina played a significant role in the organization of educational and methodological work and the consolidation of the Department's staff.
For a long period of time, the Department taught only foreign students from the first to the fifth years of studies. In 1996, the Department began teaching the "Russian Language and Speech Culture" course to Russian students. The academic staff of the Department prepared textbooks and materials for the new discipline. V.P. Krylova and E.N. Mastyugina developed and published a "Workbook" and "A collection of exercises for practical classes in the Russian language and speech culture". V.P. Krylova created a "Correction course of the Russian language" textbook, which has been republished and is used in the educational process to the present. E.V. Kazakova, O.N. Matis, A.V. Nazarova, G.M. Nurgaleeva and others worked on the creation of the necessary manuals and methodological materials for the disciplines taught.
Such teachers as T.P. Andrianova, S.B. Berezovskiy, V.V. Kislyuk, S.V. Klimenko, N.M. Fedorova, L.P. Sorokina, O.V. Frolova and others have been actively working at the Department for many years.
