Department of Russian Language was established in 1956 as a special division of MISI to work with foreign students. In 2013, it was renamed into the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language.
The Department provides training in such disciplines, like "Foreign (Russian) Language", "Business Foreign Language", "Russian Language and Culture of Speech" under the programs of additional, bachelor's, master's degree and postgraduate studies. Optional classes are organized for foreign graduate students to pass the Candidate's minimum.
Department’s research work is determined by its profile, which is reflected in the topics of scientific articles and reports published in conference collections and scientific journals. Academic staff of the Department participate in the work of both Russian and international conferences, forums, etc.
The Department trains foreign students to participate in city, All-Russian and international student scientific conferences, as well as in Olympiads and festivals in the Russian language at universities in Moscow and other Russian cities. According to the results of research work with foreign and Russian students, the Department publishes periodic collections of articles "Learning Russian language."
The Department of Russian as a Foreign Language preserves traditions of a creative attitude to teaching Russian as a means of intercultural and professional communication.
The Department takes active part in the international educational activity of MGSU.
The academic staff actively work with students during extracurricular time. For 20 years, the Pushkin Poetry Competition for foreign and Russian students has been held at MGSU. The Department conducts effective preparation for participation in various creative projects of foreign students who have repeatedly become winners and laureates of All-Russian and international competitions. The Department has been holding an online presentation contest "My Country" for foreign students studying under the pre-university training program, since 2020.
Since 2019, MGSU foreign students and postgraduates, together with teachers of the Department, have been participating in international volunteer trips to restore churches in Central Russia and the Russian North.
