MGSU hosted the International Winter School "Kolomna: urban reconstruction challenge in ancient Russian town context»

Even during the winter holidays, the university is not empty. From January 31 to February 11, 2022 Moscow State University of Civil Engineering hosted the International Winter School "Kolomna: urban reconstruction challenge in ancient Russian town context», dedicated to the issues of complex reconstruction of the center of the ancient city on the example of Kolomna.

The school was held in English with the participation of 13 students of various specialties from Germany, Albania and the UK, as well as two 4th-year students of the MGSU, Ekaterina Shaldunova and Tatiana Rishko, who study "Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage".

The school program consisted of Russian language classes, lectures on the history and architecture of Russia, the city of Kolomna, as well as the trip to Kolomna itself and group work on the project.

The curators of the school were teachers of the Department of Architecture:

- Associate Professor Nikolay Vasiliev;

- senior lecturer Ivan Saltykov;

- Researcher at the Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Planning Kirill Stepanov.

The Russian language classes were given by teachers of the Department of teaching Russian as a foreign language, Larisa Semenova, Ekaterina Zharova and Evgenia Skorik.

On the first day, an acquaintance with the university, an introductory lesson in the Russian language and a lecture on the history and culture of Russia took place. On the second day, students and teachers went to Kolomna, where they made a city tour and attended a meeting-lecture with entrepreneur Natalia Nikitina, who is engaged in the restoration and creative adaptation of historical buildings. The participants managed to get acquainted with her main project – the museum-laboratory "Silk Factory", serving as a visible example of positive changes in the city.

The students conducted full-scale research and photo-fixation of the objects with which they had to work the following days: the Levshin settlement - a block of houses of the 1920s in the style of constructivism, a constructivist bath and laundry combine and a wooden house of the former river port.

After returning to Moscow, the schedule was arranged as follows: in the morning - a lesson in the Russian language, a lecture on history and architecture, a lunch break, then work in groups on the project. Classes were held in a hybrid format online and in classrooms.

In their free time, the guys walked a lot around Moscow, studied architecture, sights, visited museums, restaurants of Russian cuisine and even skated in Gorky Park and at VDNH.

On the final day of the winter school, a presentation was held-the defense of group projects in an online format. Since the participants were of various specialties: restoration, architecture, urban planning, construction, engineering, physics, geography, etc., the projects turned out to be comprehensively elaborated, informative, creative and interesting. The teachers appreciated the high level of preparation of the groups, and the students noted that they were satisfied with their work, participation in the winter school, acquaintance with Moscow and Kolomna.
