DELEGATION OF THE SUPREME PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY OF THE DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF KOREA (DPRK) VISITS MGSU

Russia and DPRK intend to strengthen their cooperation in various areas and to bring it to the next level. These plans were unveiled in Moscow on October 22, 2019 by Valentina Matviyenko, Chairman, Federation Council, and Pak Thae-song, Chairman, Supreme People’s Assembly, North Korea. 

Valentina Matviyenko was quoted by Interfax as saying: “In our opinion, your visit to Russia also evidences a profound willingness of the DPRK’s leaders to promote cooperation with Russia. For my part, I’d like to emphasize that our country has the same willingness to continue a constructive dialogue.”

The Chairman of the Federation Council also expressed hope that the visit of the North Korean delegation would strengthen the parliamentary interaction between Russia and DPRK and promote cooperation in versatile areas. 

In his turn, Pak Thae-song remarked that Pyohgyang was determined to strengthen the relations with Moscow in compliance with the demands of the 21st century.

During the visit to Moscow, the delegation from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, chaired by Pak Thae-song, Chairman, Supreme People’s Assembly, visited MGSU.

The delegation comprised of Кiм Yong Бае, Rector, Pyongyang University of Architecture and Deputy of the Supreme People’s Assembly, Zin Chzhon Hep, Charge d’Affaires ad interim Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the Russian Federation, and other officials.

The delegation from DPRK made an introductory tour of the university, visited its educational buildings and research laboratories, including the research and production laboratory for aerodynamic and aero-acoustic testing of engineering structures and the research and development institute of construction materials and technologies. The tours were given by Olga Poddaeva, Director, Department of Physics and Civil Engineering Aerodynamics, and Andrey Pustovgar, Vice-Rector.

After the tour, the guests had a meeting with Andrey Volkov, Acting Rector, MGSU, Elena Gogina, Vice-Rector, and Natalia Samotesova, Head, Department for Coordination of International Cooperation. 

Pak Thae-song, Chairman, Supreme People’s Assembly, expressed his gratitude for the tour and said that he had found it interesting to visit the university, its research laboratories and to learn about the research projects implemented there. He added that there was a construction boom in North Korea, therefore, it was clear why the leaders of the country paid so much attention to the construction industry. 

Andrey Volkov, Acting Rector, MGSU, said: “We are pleased to have such an honoured guest at MGSU. I relate it to the fact that construction is a main driver of development in the present-day world, and now it is generating a new area of competencies. That’s why construction occupies an important position in the economy of any country… We are happy to make a proposal for cooperation. Together we will attain qualitatively new results.” 

Кiм Yong Бае, Rector, Pyongyang University of Architecture and Deputy of the Supreme People’s Assembly, remarked that he was interested in cooperation with MGSU and its versatile implementation both in terms of education and research. A cooperation agreement is to be executed by the universities in 2020. 

At the joint meeting, the parties reached a principal agreement on the issues of their cooperation, and Andrey Volkov, Acting Rector, MGSU said: “Many foreign students study at MGSU; they have come from Europe, China, and Viet Nam, but we have no students from DPRK. We would be happy to see Korean students at our university next year.”

For reference: the delegation was chaired by Pak Thae-song, Chairman, Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK, member of the Political Bureau of the Central committee of the Korean Labour party, Deputy of the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK. He is a graduate of the Kim Il-sung University (DPRK), he was a long time employee of the Central office of the Labour party of North Korea, and in 2017 he became Deputy Chairman of the Central office of the Labour party of North Korea, and since April 2019 he has been Chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly of DPRK.
